Choosing the right audio format

MP3
Universal compatibility. If something plays audio at all, it plays MP3. The safe choice for sharing and for older hardware.
M4A / AAC

Lossy, lossless, and what conversion costs

Lossless formats such as WAV and FLAC keep every sample of the original recording. Lossy formats such as MP3, AAC and OGG throw away detail chosen to be hard to hear, in exchange for files a fraction of the size.

Converting lossless to lossy loses detail once — usually imperceptibly. Converting between two lossy formats loses detail twice, because the file must be decoded and re-encoded. Converting lossy back to lossless does not restore anything; it produces a large file containing the same reduced audio. Always start from the best source you have.
