PNG is a lossless format that keeps images pixel-perfect, but that also makes photos and screenshots several times larger than they need to be. Converting to JPG re-encodes the image with efficient compression, often cutting the file size by 50–80% with no difference you can see at normal viewing size.
JPG (also called JPEG) is the format email clients, web forms and older devices expect, so switching from PNG clears up “file too large” and “unsupported format” problems in one step. One thing to know: JPG has no transparency, so any see-through areas in your PNG are placed on a white background.
Everything runs on your device — the PNG is drawn to a canvas and re-encoded as a JPG right in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there's no watermark or quality cap.
