What merging actually does to your pages

Merging copies the pages of each source file into one new document in the order you set. Nothing is re-rendered, re-compressed or converted along the way, so text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their original resolution, and the finished file weighs roughly what the originals weighed together.

That matters more than it sounds. Plenty of merge tools flatten each page into a picture, which triples the file size and makes the result impossible to search, copy from or read with a screen reader. If you merge a contract here, you can still select a clause in the merged copy.

When you need to combine PDF files

Assembling an application

Visa, mortgage, grant and university applications almost always demand one PDF containing every supporting document in a stated order.

Monthly bookkeeping

Combine a month of invoices or receipts into a single file to send to an accountant instead of thirty attachments.

Signed contracts

Put the agreement, the annexes and the signature page back together after they have been signed separately.

Scanned documents

Scanners often produce one file per page. Merging turns that pile back into the document it was meant to be.

Reports and handouts

Join a cover page, a body exported from a word processor and an appendix exported from a spreadsheet.

Getting the page order right

The order of the files in the list is the order of the pages in the result, top to bottom. Drag a file up or down to move all of its pages together — there is no separate step for reordering, and nothing is committed until you download.

If you need a different order inside one of the source files, or you want to drop a page from the middle of the merged result, do that afterwards with the Reorder PDF Pages and Delete PDF Pages tools. Both work on the merged file the same way.

Merging large or many files

Because the merge runs on your own machine there is no upload limit and no file count limit — the practical ceiling is the memory your browser can use. On a typical laptop that is comfortably into hundreds of megabytes.

If you are combining a very large batch on a phone or an older machine and it feels slow, merge in two or three rounds and then merge the results. The output is identical either way.
