PNG is the format people reach for when they need a transparent background, but it's an expensive way to store one — a lossless PNG of a photo-like image can be several times the size of the equivalent WebP. WebP supports the same alpha channel, so you keep the transparency and lose most of the bytes.
That combination is what makes WebP the standard choice for logos, icons, UI assets and product cut-outs on the web. A transparent PNG hero image weighing 800 KB routinely drops to well under 200 KB as a WebP with no visible difference.
Because WebP is lossy at the quality we use, keep your original PNG as the master copy for future editing and treat the WebP as the export. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
