Hitting a size limit without wrecking the picture

Most compression happens because something imposed a limit: an upload form capping files at 2 MB, a visa portal at 500 KB, an email server at 25 MB total. The goal is not the smallest possible file — it is the best-looking file that fits.

Compression works by reducing the data spent on detail the eye is least sensitive to, and by resizing when the image is larger than it needs to be. A 4000-pixel-wide photo displayed in a 800-pixel box is carrying five times the pixels anyone will see.

Resize before you compress harder

If an image is still too big after compression, reducing its dimensions is almost always the better next move. Halving the width and height quarters the pixel count, which cuts file size dramatically while the picture stays perfectly sharp at its new size.

Pushing quality lower instead keeps every pixel and degrades all of them — the point where blockiness appears in shadows and edges start to smear. Between a smaller sharp image and a large soft one, the smaller sharp one looks better almost every time.
