Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC — a modern format that keeps quality at about half the file size. The catch is that many Windows PCs, Android phones, web uploaders and older apps still can't open HEIC, so the photos show up as “unsupported”.

Why iPhone photos will not open
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. It is a genuinely better format — roughly half the size of JPG at the same quality — but support outside Apple's ecosystem is thin. Send a HEIC to a Windows PC, an Android phone or an upload form and it frequently will not open at all.
Converting to JPG produces a file that opens everywhere, on anything, with no plugin or extension required.
What changes in the conversion
The picture looks the same at normal viewing sizes; JPG simply needs more data to represent it, so the file grows — often to roughly double. That is the cost of universal compatibility.
Live Photos convert as their still frame, since JPG cannot hold the short video clip attached to them. Depth and portrait effects are baked into the resulting image rather than remaining adjustable.
Converting without uploading your photos
Most HEIC converters ask you to upload the photos. Personal photographs, with GPS coordinates and timestamps attached, are exactly the files worth not handing to a stranger's server.

Does converting reduce photo quality?
