Why MP3 is still the default
Newer formats encode audio more efficiently, yet MP3 remains the format to reach for when you do not control what will play the file. Three decades of hardware and software support it: car stereos, DAW timelines, gym equipment, in-flight systems, upload forms, cheap players and every phone ever made.
That reach is the whole argument. A more efficient format is no use if the device on the other end refuses to open it.
What you can convert from
- Video files
- MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM — the audio stream is extracted and written as MP3.
- Other audio formats
- WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC and OGG all convert straight across.
- Voice recordings
- Files from phones and dictation apps, which often arrive in formats desktop software will not open.
Choosing quality
Bitrate is the trade between size and fidelity. 128 kbps is fine for speech and produces the smallest files. 192 kbps is the balanced default and handles music comfortably. 320 kbps is the highest quality MP3 offers, worth choosing for music you will listen to on good equipment.
None of these can add quality the source never had. Encoding a 96 kbps recording at 320 kbps produces a bigger file, not a better one.
