Writing your own details into a photo
Metadata is not only something to strip. The author, copyright, description and credit fields exist so a photograph can say who made it, and they travel with the file wherever it goes. For anyone publishing work, filling them in is the cheapest attribution you will ever add.
Editing here rewrites those fields in place. The image data itself is untouched, so the picture is not re-encoded and loses no quality — only the metadata block changes.
Fields worth filling in
- Author / creator
- Your name or your studio name, so the file identifies its maker even when a caption does not.
- Copyright notice

What editing metadata does not do
These fields are a statement of ownership, not a lock. Anyone can strip or overwrite them, and many platforms remove metadata automatically when an image is uploaded. Treat them as attribution that survives ordinary sharing rather than as protection against deliberate misuse.
For a visible claim that survives a screenshot, add a watermark to the image itself. The two work well together: metadata for systems, a visible mark for people.
