Why a rotated page keeps coming back sideways

Most PDF viewers offer a rotate button, and it feels like it fixes the problem — until you send the file to someone else and it arrives sideways again. That button only changes how the page is displayed in that viewer, in that session. It does not touch the document.

Rotating here writes the orientation into the page itself, in the property that every PDF reader, printer and preview pane obeys. Once you download the result, the page is the right way up everywhere: in email previews, on a phone, in a print queue and for whoever you send it to.

Rotate every page or just the crooked ones

A scan of a bound report often comes out with the landscape tables sideways and everything else fine. Apply a rotation to the whole document when the whole document is wrong, or select the individual pages that need turning and leave the rest alone.

Rotation is lossless. Nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed — the page is simply marked as sitting at a different angle — so text stays selectable and images keep every pixel of their original resolution no matter how many times you turn them.

Fixing the usual culprits

Sheet-fed scans

Feeding a stack in landscape produces a document that reads correctly only with your head tilted. One 90-degree turn fixes the lot.

Phone photos of documents

Camera orientation data is frequently lost when images are placed into a PDF, leaving pages upside down.

Mixed-orientation reports

Wide spreadsheets and charts are often exported sideways inside otherwise portrait documents.

Faxed or emailed scans

Documents that have passed through several systems commonly arrive at 180 degrees.
